Higher achievements become easier with a proper basis. (And complex things originate in simple things.) Roots can be general knowledge or health or survival skills or a supportive community. Trying to achieve something great on your own will be difficult. There has to be a source of power that nourishes it, and that's usually something simple and profound.

Some people are born into social conditions that makes it very easy for them to become successful with whatever they aim for, while others don't have that rooting and can put in all the effort they want, they might still burn out.

The tree is really a good metaphor for how nature works an how we are at least to some degree subject to her laws. A tree that is uprooted will be concerned with bare survival and not have the foundation for growing fruit.

Well, aside from its biblical reference, I take it to mean this:
Should you wish to have your fruit (the good things in life) you must also work with the roots (the bad things in life). You must work hard and persevere past hardships in order to obtain your fruit. It also makes a point to say that, though we may feel like they are, there are no pointless moments in your life. If something bad happens, it is to mold you- to make you prepared for the days when you get what you want. It humbles you.
That's what I think anyway...

I think this reference is in the Holy Bible.. Fruits of the Spirit maybe...  Galatians 5:22-23 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."
